Animals killed in shelters across the States

Las Vegas shelter kills 1,000 animals after vets discover contagious diseases outbreak. The shelter annually adopts more than 7,000 dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs and other animals.

“It’s unforgivable in light of the fact that it was absolutely preventable,” said Holly Stoberski, legal counsel for Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary, a group that has worked with Lied Animal Shelter to find homes for impounded animals. “They were not properly vaccinating the dogs and cats in a timely manner.”

Well, that’s true. If the people that were hired to take care of these animals had done their jobs right; these cats and dogs more than likely would not have taken ill. However, most of them would have still been put down – they would have been spared the suffering though.

The animal shelter, Town Lake, in Austin Texas handles about 23,000 animals per year. Per year. Half of those animals are euthanized .If not more. How many die in your town? Multiply that number by all the major cities in your state. Add the biggest towns. Multiply that by the number of States. Final answer?

This number of throw-away cats and dogs does not take into count the numbers of stray cats gone feral or the number of dogs that never make it to the shelter . It does not take into account the number of animals in no-kill shelters.

All across the States cats and dogs from newborns to the elderly are being put to sleep. The animals did not choose to be born nor abandoned. Purebreds are not exempt from being slaughtered either. Last week there were at least 4 German Shepherds ( two of them 4 month old puppies ) a Rottie, 4 – 5 chihuahuas, a Siberian Husky… and that’s only the glimpse I had.

  • 5 million dogs and cats are killed yearly in U.S. shelters. That is 13,800 every day or 575 dogs and cats killed every hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • In six years, one female dog and her off spring can theoretically be the source of 67,000 dogs.
  • In seven years, one female cat and her off spring can theoretically be the source of 420,000 cats.

Who is responsible for this outrageous , irresponsible action? You are. I am. Anybody who does not speak up, shout out !!! You are responsible if you thought it was a good idea if Muffy had at least one litter before you had her spayed. You are responsible if you decided not to get your “boy” fixed because he couldn’t have puppies or because you think it would make your dog less “macho”. It is your responsibility if you bring home an animal that you cannot afford.

Everyone loves puppies or kittens. However, animals outgrow their baby cuteness within a few months. Animals do not train themselves, feed themselves. As an owner you are the Caretaker. 24/7 . Animals are a responsibility. Your responsibility as well as mine. Speak up if you see an animal being abused! Abuse is not only physical as in being kicked, beaten, hit. Abuse is a lack of shelter, lack of food, lack of medical and in my eyes; lack of companionship.

A lot of States ; cities, offer discount spaying or neutering clinics. Check into it. Maybe you do not need to use one, but perhaps your neighbor could use a little help. Volunteer. Donate. Not just money is needed. Towels, bowls, leashes, newspapers . All you have to do is make that call. Ask. Help save an animal today. Everyday. Until we no longer have throw away surplus animals being destroyed.

  1. The government will only do so much, I am a foster mom for some that we can rescue here – it’s up to people in each community to force our local governement to enact tougher laws about neutering and spaying animals and about abusing and abandoning animals – we are a sorry lot very often – and the greatest, kindest most wonderful people in the world once we decide to let a situation touch our hearts, and if 5 million dogs and cats can’t touch our hearts nothing can. Please get going on a local level and then a national level to force the issue of spaying and neutering so we are not contributing to the problem.

  2. I just adopted another and fostered another myself. Something needs to be done, but I don’t have all the answers. I know too many laws could cause more problems than one could imagine. We don’t even have enough law enforcement for human issues now. I’m so angry to know how they suffer and get killed. I too am seeking a solution that might truly be good and work. One thought is that for those that choose to keep their animals unsterilized that the city tags be much higher to help with the cost of shelters re-homing, etc.

I’d love to hear ideas that would truly work and only hurt the bad guys not just the poor who love, feed & care for their pets.

  3. I have always loved animals. To see how many are killed in one year is just horrible. This has to stop. There has to be somthing that can be done to stop this.

  8. why would u put down that many animals a day give them the love that they cant get. be their friend and give them time. if u dont theyll all be extinct and its because of YOU!!!!!!

  9. you guys said that your helping animals not but them to the end of there lives. When im pesident im makeing a law that animal can never be put down only if their really ill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and ill have u fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. There are some really dumb comments here. Although I do not like the practice of euthanizing the animals. The people to blame are the careless pet owners that do not have their animals fixed (for whatever sick reasons they may have) then allow them to run loose, because they feel they have the right too. Then when there is unwanted puppies and kittens or what have you they just dump them either in the country or at the animal shelter. The shelters become overcrowded because there is little funding for them and if something isn’t done about the crowding the animals become sick and you have an entire shelter of dead or dying sick animals.

Make some laws to have animals spayed and neutered and this man-made tragedy will end.

  11. Good point i agree
Could not have said it better myself
Is this the right place to ask a question
Can i ask a pet question here, i know its probably not the right place
Does anyone here have a dog
Does anyone here have a cat

  12. Thank you. I have 4 dogs, 2 cats , 2 feral kittens and 6 horses in my four legged family at this time. My dogs, cats and some of my horses are rescues.
